Snake a Palooza

Wow, this must be the year of the snake.

This is the third snake that Son has killed in the last 24 hours.  One was beside the barn, one was in the barn, and this last one was in the coop, in a nesting box...

with a full belly.

We cut the belly open (pretty gruesome) and guess what we found?

The black chick that was hatched by the broody hen several weeks ago, which had gone missing yesterday morning.  It was significantly bigger than in this picture.

We were very sad to lose the chick and even sadder to know that it was eaten by a snake.

Thankfully Paden has the stomach for this sort of thing.
Always sad to lose one of the flock.
I thought the bulge might be an egg.

We thought it might be a couple of eggs, too, since the snake was in a nesting box. That's why we went ahead and cut it open...to make sure.

we had the same problem with chicken snakes back when we raised 100 (yes ONE HUNDRED) of them for 4-H. Daddy built a cage (about the size of 2 soccer balls) out of chicken wire and put a hard boiled egg inside. The snake would slither inside and eat the egg and not be able to fit back through the wire. then dad would get the cage and kill the snake.
